The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

The construction is the Birkin's, scaled up. Two straps close the flap at the turn-lock, the padlock and keys sit in a leather clochette, and the rolled handles are sized for the larger body. At 40 cm it is a travel and weekend size, and the canvas body makes it lighter in hand than an all-leather 40.
Canvas does not scratch the way leather does, and the leather corner patches take the knocks at the base.
