The Hermès Kelly Élan: Original Clutch, Modern Revival and Folie
How a hidden hand strap became shoulder carry, and how feathers transformed the same restrained silhouette
The Kelly Élan is a study in a long, quiet line. It keeps the Kelly's flap and sangles, removes the upright top handle and draws the body into a slim clutch. Its modern reappearance adds shoulder carry; the Folie versions add feathers. Those are different stages of the design, and identifying them correctly makes the history far more interesting.
The original Élan: a hidden hand strap
Early-2000s examples of the Kelly Élan are distinguished by a flat leather hand strap across the rear. The sangles wrap around the bag to form the handhold, allowing the wearer to slide a hand behind the body. With no top handle rising above the flap, the outline remains uninterrupted.
Sotheby's describes the main original production period as 2000–2002, while also noting later examples. The Élan preceded the Kelly Pochette of 2004 and the Kelly Longue of 2006, but it was not the first Kelly clutch: the earlier model often cataloged as the Kelly Crutch was already present by the late 1980s.
The Parchemin Box Calf example shows the original design clearly. Its pale smooth leather makes the edge finishing, shallow profile and hardware easy to read. The rear view is particularly important when identifying an Élan: a front photograph alone can conceal the difference between the original clutch and the later shoulder version.
Spring–Summer 2023: shoulder carry
Hermès reintroduced the Élan for Spring–Summer 2023 with a removable shoulder strap. This changes the carrying system while preserving the long body and low profile. The strap can be removed for clutch use; its attachment is a documented feature of the production bag, not a speculative runway detail.
Modern examples are often cataloged around 28cm wide, but individual measurements vary. Confirm width, height and depth from the actual bag, together with the strap drop. Its narrow body is designed for a considered group of essentials. The extra width does not make it equivalent in capacity to a deeper handbag.
The Folie: leather structure, feather movement
The feathered Élan shown in the Spring–Summer 2023 collection is commonly known as the Kelly Élan Folie, and some listings use Plumes. The names should be accompanied by a clear material description. On the Vert Comics example here, the structural body is Chèvre Chamkila; ostrich feathers are applied to the front. “Ostrich” by itself would misleadingly suggest an ostrich-leather bag.
The distinction is visible in motion. The leather defines the shape, while the feathers extend beyond the lower edge and respond to movement. In Vert Comics, the monochromatic green makes that texture especially legible. In Noir, it creates a more tonal effect. Neither colorway requires an unsupported rarity ranking to explain its appeal.
Three configurations, clearly separated
| Configuration | Carrying system | Defining feature |
|---|---|---|
| Original Élan | Rear leather hand strap | A clutch with no upright top handle or modern detachable shoulder strap. |
| Contemporary Élan | Removable shoulder strap | Shoulder and clutch use within the same slim silhouette. |
| Élan Folie / feathered version | Modern shoulder-and-clutch arrangement | A leather body with applied feathers; record both materials. |
What to examine before acquisition
On an original clutch, inspect the rear hand strap, its seams and the areas where the sangles turn around the body. On a contemporary example, check the detachable strap and its interior attachment points. In both cases, request side, base, rear and open-interior views. The shallow body makes distortion from overfilling especially noticeable.
For a Folie, the feather layer needs its own detailed photographs. Check its fullness, attachment, broken shafts and any areas of compression. The feathers should not obscure the condition of the leather beneath them. Storage should protect the embellishment from crushing and avoid strain on the strap or closure.
Descriptions should keep the manufacturing record separate from the revival story. A modern bag photographed beside a vintage clutch does not become an original-era example. Likewise, a product listing's general history should not override the actual date stamp and construction of the object offered.
Jane's perspective: The most revealing view of an Élan is often from behind. The original hand strap and the modern shoulder fittings explain how Hermès changed the bag's use while preserving its restraint. The Folie then adds movement to that same disciplined shape.
