The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Christie's records Box calf Kellys in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe Kelly 15 scales the Kelly down to a size where it works as an object as much as a bag. In Rouge Vif Courchevel it is a bright, clean red over the fine embossed grain Courchevel carried before Hermès replaced it with Epsom.
Courchevel is lighter and slightly softer in hand than Epsom, with a subtle sheen Epsom's flatter finish does not have. Sellier construction keeps the miniature rigid and its lines sharp, and gold hardware warms the red.
Collector's Insight:
Courchevel belongs to the era before Epsom, so a Courchevel Kelly 15 is by definition a vintage piece, and Rouge Vif is one of the house's longest-running reds.
Resale Insight:
On a vintage micro Kelly, buyers check the corners and the flap edge for wear and the gold hardware for plating loss, which shows quickly at this scale.
