The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsTwo crafts build each bag: a basket weaver shapes the wicker body, and a leather artisan frames it.
Nata keeps the bag light in tone against the natural willow, and palladium hardware adds a cool note. At 35 cm the Picnic is a true day bag rather than an evening piece.
Collector's Insight:
The Picnic began at 35 cm, and while the Kelly 20 Mini Picnic has been the more common size in recent years, this example returns to the original scale. Nata Swift gives it a lighter, cleaner look than the original's Barenia, without Barenia's patina.
Resale Insight:
Wicker cannot be repaired once strands break, and light Swift shows marks readily, so buyers inspect the weave and the leather edges, especially at the handle and flap, before anything else.
