The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsSellier construction stitches panels together with visible exterior saddle stitching, producing the crisp architectural silhouette that distinguishes Sellier from the softer rounded edges of Retourné. This piece combines two Toile canvas colors with a single leather color across the body construction: Hermès' "Toile and Leather" Kelly configuration with a tricolor palette extension.
The Rose Shocking Toile reads as hot pink across the front and back center panels, the Écru-Beige Toile reads as cream across the top horizontal trim band under the flap, and Framboise leather forms the frame, handle, sangles, side gussets, base, and all leather trim across the construction. The combination produces a graphic three-tone register where the saturated pink center is anchored top and bottom by contrasting neutral and saturated raspberry. Palladium hardware reads cool silver-tone against the contrast leather, completing the lighter hardware register that pairs the bright pink palette with restraint rather than warmth. Toile production at Hermès is restricted relative to all-leather construction, and tricolor Toile + Leather Kelly configurations are less common than single-Toile-color combinations within the program.
Collector's Insight:
Toile has been part of Hermès' canvas program since its early travel-bag production and currently runs in restricted seasonal availability rather than continuous catalog production. Toile + Leather Kelly construction appears in standard production periodically as a seasonal offering, with tricolor configurations representing the less common end of the Toile Kelly range. Rose Shocking is among the most pursued pinks in Hermès' current color program: Auction catalogs consistently rank Rose Shocking with Mauve Sylvestre, 5P Bubblegum, and Magnolia among the top-tier pinks for collector demand. Framboise occupies the warmer raspberry register within Hermès' pink-red palette and pairs with Rose Shocking in a documented bicolor pink combination favored within the Toile + Leather Kelly program. Kelly Sellier 32 is the less common of the Sellier 28/32/35 trio in current production.
Resale Insight:
Multi-color Toile + Leather Kelly bags trade at a premium over single-color Toile or all-leather Kelly Sellier productions due to the rarer construction combination and the multi-variable color specification. The original Hermès Madison Avenue boutique receipt is included with the piece, documenting first-hand acquisition provenance, sales associate attribution, and 2023 purchase date (receipt-documented provenance is a measurable secondary-market value driver for limited-production configurations. Pristine condition with intact Toile surface integrity, no canvas thread lift or pulling, no Framboise leather corner whitening, no Palladium scratching, plastic intact on hardware, and complete documentation commands the strongest positioning. Toile canvas registers wear differently from leather) surface integrity at the corners, sangle bridle points, and base panel deserves close pre-purchase inspection.
