The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsVeau Doblis is Hermès's calf suede, with a fine nap that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. In Noir it reads deeper and softer than black Box or Swift, the matte surface flattening highlights into one continuous tone, and gold hardware is the only shine against it.
Sellier construction sets the edges outward with the seams exposed, giving the Kelly 28 its rigid, architectural profile, an unusual partner for a soft suede. With handling, the nap shifts and takes on character rather than recording wear as scratches.
Collector's Insight:
Suede needs more careful storage than smooth leather, so vintage Doblis Kellys in sound condition surface infrequently, and a Sellier build is the less common of the two constructions in suede.
Resale Insight:
Buyers check the nap for rubbing and flattening at the corners, handle and flap edge, and for water marks, which suede does not release.
