Hermès Kelly Sellier 28 Vibrato & Noir Box Calf Palladium Hardware

Vibrato is a discontinued Hermès construction technique introduced in 2000 and produced through 2007 before the house withdrew the format from production. Thin strips of suede in varying colors are stacked horizontally and sliced through to expose the striped cross-section that defines the format, with each Vibrato panel structurally unique to its bag because the slice trajectory varies the visible strip widths and color distribution piece by piece. The technique requires substantially more material and atelier labor than standard panel construction, and Hermès has not reintroduced Vibrato in the nearly two decades since the program closed. The D □ (2000) stamp places this piece in the launch year of Vibrato production — among the first wave of Kelly bags Hermès produced in the technique.

This Kelly Sellier 28 is rendered in a grayscale Vibrato palette — strips ranging from cream through pale grey and medium grey to deep charcoal and black across the front and back panels, gusset, and base — framed by smooth Noir Box Calf at the top trim, sangles, handle, sides, base trim, and clochette. The grayscale combination is the more restrained of the documented Vibrato palette executions, contrasting with the saturated multicolor configurations that dominated Vibrato output during the program. Noir Box Calf is one of the most foundational permanent-palette Hermès leather combinations, with the polished mirror surface of Box Calf reading at its most intense register against the smaller Kelly 28 proportion. Sellier construction stitches panels together with visible exterior saddle stitching, producing the crisp boxy silhouette that contrasts with the softer rounded edges of Retourné. Palladium hardware completes the cooler register aligned with the grayscale palette. Interior typically lined in Chèvre on Sellier construction of this era.

Collector's Insight:
Vibrato launched in 2000 and ran through 2007 before Hermès closed the technique. Kelly 28 in Vibrato is among the more documented size options within the program (Kelly 28 was the standard mid-size of the Kelly Sellier program through the Vibrato production years), making this configuration the more recognizable Vibrato Kelly format than the rarer Kelly 25 or 32 Vibrato sizes. The D □ (2000) stamp places this piece in the program's launch year, with the first wave of Vibrato Kelly production representing the rarest segment within an already-restricted output. The grayscale palette is the more restrained Vibrato execution relative to the saturated multicolor productions that defined the visual identity of the program. The Noir Box Calf frame is permanent-palette foundational pairing — Box Calf has been progressively reduced from broad Hermès production as the house has shifted toward grained leathers, adding a second restriction layer to the configuration.

Resale Insight:
Vibrato Kelly and Birkin pieces trade outside standard Kelly secondary-market dynamics, with valuation anchored to discontinued production status, the unrepeatable manual technique, and the structural uniqueness of each piece. Sotheby's, Christie's, and Bonhams have documented Vibrato Kelly and Birkin auction transactions across the past decade as comparables for the archival tier. The 2000 launch-year production positions this piece at the opening of Vibrato production — a segment that auction provenance has historically treated as the most desirable within discontinued programs across luxury houses generally. The Kelly 28 size is the most consistently demanded Kelly Sellier size across the secondary market. Excellent condition with intact Vibrato strip integrity, no slice-edge fraying or lifting, intact Box Calf frame, and the documented square-era D stamp together establish position within Vibrato comparables. Original removable shoulder strap is included with the piece, alongside box and lock — a complete set with additional original packaging (dustbag, clochette, keys, care booklet) would command upper-band positioning.
