The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsGris Mouette is a cool, blue-tinged gray, lighter than Etain and cooler than Gris Asphalte. On Togo's tumbled grain the color reads as a soft, versatile neutral. The Noir interior creates a tonal shift when the bag opens: pale gray outside, deep black inside. Retourne construction gives the bag soft, rounded edges. Palladium hardware keeps the composition cool-toned throughout.
Collector's Insight:
HSS bi-color Kellys with Verso (contrasting interior) specifications can only be obtained through the Special Order program. Gris Mouette with Noir interior is a restrained, tonal combination that reads as a sophisticated neutral rather than a statement color pairing. Togo is the most common HSS leather but Gris Mouette was a limited-production color. The horseshoe stamp confirms client specification.

HSS Kelly 28s trade at premiums over standard production. Bi-color specifications with neutral exterior and dark interior appeal to a broad buyer pool because they function as everyday bags with a hidden detail. Pristine condition on a 2016 piece indicates careful storage over a decade.
