The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsShiny alligator suits it: the skin is glazed by hand with an agate stone to a lacquered depth, and light moves across the scales one tile at a time, so the bag reads midnight in shadow and sapphire in sun.
Sellier construction holds the geometry a glazed exotic depends on, with rigid panels and external saddle stitching, and gold hardware is the warmer, higher-contrast pairing on deep blue.
Collector's Insight:
Bleu Saphir works as a discreet exotic color, dark enough to wear anywhere without announcing the skin. A shiny finish demands flawless skins, since the glaze magnifies any irregularity rather than hiding it.
Resale Insight:
Dark blues sit alongside Noir as the exotic colors with the broadest buyer pool. On shiny alligator, buyers check the glaze at the corners, the flap edge and the handle, where water marks and scratches show first.
