The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

Retourne construction turns the seams inward for softer, rounded edges that suit the drawn line, and palladium hardware keeps the pale gray and bright threads cool.
Collector's Insight:
Embroidered Kellys are limited by the hours each one takes rather than by material, and the tartan has appeared across several years in different colorways. The pale gray ground with green and pink is one of the lighter versions.
Resale Insight:
Buyers check the embroidery for pulled or loose threads and the pale Swift for marks and color transfer, since both show readily.
