The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsOn shiny alligator the color gains depth across the polished scales: darker tones settle between the tiles while the raised centers catch vivid green, and gold hardware warms the jewel tone.
At Kelly 20 Mini II scale, Sellier construction keeps sharp, exterior-stitched edges around a compact frame, and the symmetrical belly scales sit in tight proportion to the small panels.
Collector's Insight:
Jewel-tone greens on shiny alligator appear far less often than neutrals, and Vert Émeraude sits at the formal end of the house's greens, darker than the bright seasonal shades.
Resale Insight:
On shiny alligator, buyers check the glaze at the corners, the flap edge and the handle, where water marks and scratches show first, and at mini scale any flaw sits closer to the eye.
