The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Christie's records Box calf Kellys in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThis Horseshoe Special Order Kelly 20 Mini II is a Multico build: a Bordeaux body with Raisin on the handle, sangles, piping and detachable shoulder strap, sewn with red contrast stitching that picks up the body color without repeating it.
Bordeaux is the house's deep wine red; Raisin is a cooler purple-brown that reads nearly black against it, so the stitch line carries much of the design. Chèvre's fine grain holds the small Sellier form, and gold hardware warms both colors.
Collector's Insight:
The Horseshoe stamp marks a client special order, and a red-family Multico like Bordeaux with Raisin is less common than the neutral pairings most special orders choose.
Resale Insight:
Special orders are judged on their color combination, and a tonal red pairing like this reads as deliberate rather than loud. Buyers check the chèvre corners and the contrast stitching for soiling.
