The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsSwift is softer to the touch than Box but shows scratches more readily, and at 35 cm the Birkin is a full day bag. Palladium hardware keeps the palette cool.
Collector's Insight:
Toile and Swift Birkins are lighter than all-leather versions of the same size, and patterned toile editions appear far less often than plain canvas.
Resale Insight:
Canvas shows dirt and color transfer more readily than leather, so buyers check the toile body and corners, and the black Swift for scratches at the flap and handles.
