The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsOstrich shows the species' distinctive quill pattern: raised follicles where feathers were removed, distributed across the skin in irregular clusters. The pattern is unique to each hide; no two bags show identical placement. Black ostrich reads as textured neutral rather than exotic statement; the quill dots provide visual interest without the scale patterns of crocodile or lizard.
The leather has a natural suppleness that breaks in gracefully while maintaining structure. Rose Gold hardware warms the black leather with its copper-pink undertone, one of the least common Hermès hardware finishes. Plastic remains on hardware. Feet show surface marks; the rest of the bag presents as new.
Collector's Insight:
Black Ostrich represents the most versatile entry point into exotic Birkins: the quill pattern adds texture without the visual weight of crocodile, and black grounds the material in everyday wearability. Ostrich is also more forgiving than smooth exotics; minor surface contact doesn't show the way it would on shiny crocodile. Rose Gold hardware appears on a small fraction of production, adding a hardware-variant rarity to the exotic skin.
Resale Insight:
Ostrich Birkins trade between leather and crocodile price points. Black is the most liquid exotic base, with consistent demand and none of the color specificity that can narrow buyer pools, and Rose Gold hardware narrows the comparable supply further. Recent production with minimal wear commands strong secondary market positioning.
