Matte alligator is finished without the glaze that gives shiny alligator its mirror surface, so the scale pattern reads through texture rather than reflection. In black the effect is quiet: the grid of scales carries the bag, and gold hardware is the only point of warmth.
At 30 cm the Birkin holds a full day's essentials without the bulk of the 35. Inside, it is lined in chèvre with a zip pocket and an open pocket, and the turn-lock, flap and sangles follow the classic Birkin configuration.
