The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsA printed Birkin 25 from the SS18 runway collection, rendered in a multicolor collage print designed by British illustrator Nigel Peake. The print stages a graphic assembly of Hermès design references: stripes in primary palettes, checkerboard panels, geometric blocks, and painted edges. The design wraps continuously over the full Swift surface, including the front, back, sides, and handles.
The construction shifts the Birkin 25 from a leather goods object into a vehicle for Peake's print language. Each panel reads as a discrete graphic composition while the full bag resolves into the broader collage. The painted line work and color-block geometry are characteristic Peake elements drawn from his fine art and editorial illustration practice, translated to leather application by the Hermès atelier.
Swift is the leather Hermès uses for runway-edition printed Birkins because of its smooth, fine grain and high color hold under print application. The leather absorbs printed pigment cleanly, and the smooth surface allows the graphic elements to read sharply at viewing distance. Palladium hardware provides the only tonal break against the saturated print.
Collector's Insight:
Runway-edition printed Birkins occupy their own collector category, distinct from standard production Birkins of the same size. The One Two Three and Away We Go print was released as part of Hermès' SS18 women's runway collection and produced in extremely limited quantities for the global market. Nigel Peake's designs for Hermès have been collected across leather goods, scarves, and home objects, with the printed Birkin executions sitting at the top of the Peake-Hermès collector hierarchy. The Birkin 25 size in this print is rarer than the larger format runway productions.
Resale Insight:
Printed Birkins from Hermès runway collections trade as flagship runway-edition pieces in the secondary market, tracked separately from standard Birkin pricing. Collectors of artist collaborations and special-edition prints anchor the demand. Recent Nigel Peake printed Birkin comparables have traded strongly at auction, with valuation responsive to size, condition, and exterior preservation. The print is condition-sensitive across the lifecycle: scuffs and edge wear show against the saturated colors, and pristine examples support the strongest market positioning.
