The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe Faubourg Day is where the series began: one of the two 2019 debut colorways, with the blue Night, that rendered the façade of 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré as a Birkin for the first time. It is the daylight view of the flagship, and the later editions (Midnight, Snow) read as variations on the pair.
The construction maps the building in five leathers: Gold Madame as the sunlit brick body and walls, Ébène Matte Alligator across the flap and handles, Sombrero on the trim and window frames, Craie Epsom as the glass panes, and Orange H Swift for the awnings, with the clochette cut as a miniature Hermès shopping bag. Palladium hardware grounds the warm palette, and the Sellier construction holds every architectural line rigid, which is why the format was chosen for the series.
Collector's Insight:
The Day and the Night are the two debut colorways that established the series. Within Faubourg collecting, debut-edition examples anchor the set the way first editions anchor a library. Each unit's leather marquetry is built panel by panel, and the alligator components place the piece under the house's exotic allocation.
Resale Insight:
Faubourg Birkins are priced with auction results as the primary reference, and the two debut colorways carry the broadest recognition in the series. Supply is fixed to the original production run.
