The Picnic line began with the Kelly, shown in the Spring/Summer 2011 collection that closed Jean Paul Gaultier's tenure at the house. Its body was woven from osier, the willow used in traditional French basketry, framed and trimmed in leather. Hermès extended the treatment across the following decade to the Garden Party, the Bolide, and a miniaturized Kelly, but the Birkin did not join the family until 2021, a full ten years after the format's debut.

This example belongs to that first 25cm run, which introduced Rouge Swift as the trim leather for the line. The contrast is the entire design argument: pale hand woven willow against a saturated red calfskin, rustic material and formal architecture holding each other in tension. Swift is the smooth, fine grained calfskin Hermès selects when it wants color to read at full intensity, and it carries the flap, sangles, handles, and base corners where the structure needs leather rather than weave.

The 25 is the most compact size in the standard Birkin range. The interior is lined in matching Chèvre with one zip pocket and one open pocket, and the signature turn lock, front flap, and sangles complete the configuration. Wicker construction asks for dry storage and gentle handling: unlike leather, woven willow cannot be refinished, which is why condition on these pieces is absolute rather than relative.

Collector's Insight: Picnic pieces come out of a narrow specialist lane, since the willow work requires basketry skills the leather ateliers do not perform, and they surface only in small seasonal runs rather than standing production. The Birkin arrived last in the family and the 25 is its smallest format, which places this configuration at the tightest point of an already restricted line. First year examples additionally carry the Rouge trim that introduced the pairing.

Resale Insight: Woven pieces trade on condition to a degree leather bags do not, because willow cannot be restored or replaced once it splits or discolors, so pristine examples define the top of the market and lightly worn ones fall away sharply. Supply is fixed by the size of each production run, and Picnic Birkins draw the collector building a materials focused shelf rather than the buyer replacing a daily bag.
