petit h is the house's upcycling atelier, founded in 2010 by Pascale Mussard, a sixth generation member of the Hermès family. It works exclusively from materials the other workshops set aside: offcuts, hides that fell short of the standard for a bag, leftover silk and porcelain and crystal. Artisans are given the pile and the freedom to decide what it becomes, which is the reverse of how everything else at Hermès is made. The results are one of a kind or produced in tiny series, and they reach clients through travelling pop up events rather than standing boutique stock.

The Robot Buddy is that spirit at its most direct. A cube in turquoise Epsom, panelled in Fuchsia and Vert Émeraude shiny Porosus crocodile, with interior and detailing in Blue Frida and Blue Electric. Cut out eyes, a gold ring for a nose, and a hinged metallic mouth give the cube its face, while a curved top handle and tab closures make it a bag rather than a sculpture. It functions, but it is built to be looked at.

Exotic offcuts are the scarcest input the atelier receives, since crocodile is measured to the centimetre in the workshops that use it first. That is what places this piece at the top of the petit h range: the same materials as a shiny Porosus Birkin, assembled by a workshop whose brief is invention rather than repetition.

Collector's Insight: Every petit h piece is unrepeatable by construction, because the atelier works from what is left rather than from a specification, so the exact combination of hides in this cube cannot be ordered or reproduced. Exotic petit h is the narrowest slice of an already small output.
