The story behind the Constance

In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.

This Mini Constance 18 sets a panel of multicolor marbled silk into a Swift frame, so the front reads like a painted surface held in leather. The H clasp, the Constance's signature, closes the flap in palladium.

Swift is smooth and fine-grained, softer than Box but more sensitive to scratches, and the adjustable strap lets the bag be worn on the shoulder or crossbody.

Collector's Insight:
Silk-panel Constances appear in short seasonal runs rather than standing production, and the marbling makes each one read slightly differently.

Resale Insight:
Silk cannot be cleaned or restored like leather, so buyers check the marbled panel for pulls, marks and fading first, then the Swift corners.
