Hermès Matte Havane Crocodile Vest FW 2007 Jean-Paul Gaultier FR38

Matte Havane crocodile vest from Jean-Paul Gaultier's Fall/Winter 2007 collection for Hermès. Full matte crocodile front panels, four covered crocodile buttons, two hip pockets with flap closures, V-neckline with pointed hem. Back panel is 70% wool, 30% cashmere knit. Silk lined. Gaultier's RTW collections for Hermès occasionally included exotic leather garments produced in extremely small quantities. Crocodile ready-to-wear is a different production stream than crocodile bags; the hide must be cut to garment patterns rather than bag templates, requiring larger and differently shaped skins. FR38 (US 6).

Collector's Insight: Hermès exotic leather garments were produced in single-digit quantities per style per season. They required dedicated hide selection separate from the bag program because garment panels demand different dimensions and flexibility. Gaultier's tenure (2003-2010) was the period most associated with exotic RTW at Hermès. This vest is a vintage piece from the middle of that era. Surviving examples in excellent condition are rare because garments sustain more contact wear than bags.

Resale Insight: Hermès exotic RTW occupies a collector lane entirely separate from bags. The buyer is someone who collects Gaultier-era Hermès as a design archive rather than as accessories. Crocodile garments surface on the secondary market far less frequently than crocodile bags because fewer were produced and fewer have survived in wearable condition.
