The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe Hermès Kelly 32 in SO BLACK leather Black PVD Box with PVD Black hardware. Box leather is one of the oldest Hermès calfskins, distinguished by its tight grain and high polish that develops a deep patina over decades of use.
Retourne construction involves turning the bag inside-out during assembly, producing softer, rounded edges. The 32cm Kelly is the most classic proportion for the silhouette. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and two slip pockets. Single top handle with detachable shoulder strap.
Collector's Insight:
The So Black edition uses black PVD-coated hardware against black leather, eliminating all metallic contrast. Originally released in limited quantities, it has become one of the most sought-after special editions in the secondary market.
Resale Insight:
The Kelly's resale market has strengthened consistently, with Sellier construction and smaller sizes (20-25cm) seeing particular demand. Classic colors and complete sets (strap, lock, keys, clochette) support strongest valuations.
