The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsWarmer than Beton, lighter than Parchment, brighter than Craie, Nata brings the spectrum of white out into the sun. Used here in Taurillon Clemence leather, the color is highlighted even more so by the palladium hardware, another new addition from Hermès, which makes this bag particularly special.
Retourne construction involves turning the bag inside-out during assembly, producing softer, rounded edges. The 32cm Kelly is the most classic proportion for the silhouette. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and two slip pockets. Single top handle with detachable shoulder strap.
Collector's Insight:
The Kelly in Nata Taurillon Clemence carries the lineage of the original 1930s sac à dépêches, renamed the Kelly in 1956.
Resale Insight:
The market demand for Kelly bags, particularly in the 32cm size, continues to outpace supply. This specific configuration is a staple for collectors seeking a balance of heritage and contemporary style.
