The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsArdoise Epsom, a dark slate gray, forms the main body; Noir Tadelakt, smooth with a soft sheen, runs as vertical stripes; and Vert Peppermint chèvre is cut into five-pointed stars inlaid across both.
Each leather has a job: Epsom's pressed grain holds the Sellier's rigid lines, Tadelakt's smoothness contrasts with it, and chèvre's tight grain keeps clean edges on the small stars. Palladium hardware stays cool against the dark ground.
Collector's Insight:
Standard Casaque Kellys block two colors; the Étoilée adds a third leather cut into stars, which adds time to every unit. Two dark neutrals with one bright accent make it read restrained at a distance and detailed up close.
Resale Insight:
Buyers check the star inlays for lifting edges and the seams between leathers, along with the corners and handle, since inlay work cannot be redone to match.
