Hermès HAC Birkin 32 Rouge Vif Ostrich Gold Hardware
Hermès HAC Birkin 32 Rouge Vif Ostrich Gold Hardware
The Haut à Courroies is the bag the Birkin came from. Hermès built it in 1892 to carry a rider's saddle and boots, and when Jean-Louis Dumas sketched a bag for Jane Birkin nearly a century later he was drawing a shortened HAC. The double courroies over the flap, the tubular pontets and the square-tipped spindle all belong to the older bag, and the 32 is the compact end of a line that began at 40 cm and above.
Rouge Vif is the vivid orange-leaning red of the Hermès reds, brighter and hotter than Rouge H, and ostrich is the skin that carries it best. The quill follicles read as raised dots scattered across the panels, denser at the center of the hide and thinning toward the edges, so no two bags carry the same distribution. Ostrich takes oil from handling and deepens rather than dulls with age. Gold hardware pulls the warmth in the red forward.

Collector's Insight: The 32 is a discontinued HAC size, alongside the 28 and the 36, which is why it surfaces so rarely compared with the 40. It is also the size that makes the HAC wearable rather than architectural: the format holds more than its footprint suggests because the depth runs to 16 cm, but the handle drop is only 8 cm, so it is carried in the hand or the crook of the arm rather than on the shoulder. In ostrich the calculation changes again, since exotic HACs in any size are a small fraction of an already small production.
Resale Insight: HAC buyers are rarely first-time Hermès buyers. The bag reads as a collector's choice, and the people pursuing it usually already own Birkins and want the ancestor, which makes the audience knowledgeable and narrow at the same time. Discontinued sizes and exotic skins are the two variables that move HAC pricing most, and this bag carries both. Condition is the offsetting factor: ostrich shows handling at the corners and along the courroies, and that is where a knowledgeable buyer looks first.
