The story behind the Kelly Danse
Designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and introduced in 2008, discontinued in 2013 and reintroduced in 2019 as the Kelly Danse II. An adjustable strap lets it be carried as a clutch, on the shoulder, crossbody, at the waist or as a backpack.
The original Kelly Danse, designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, is a transformable bag worn as a backpack, crossbody, shoulder bag, or belt bag by adjusting the single long strap through the Kelly-style handle. Swift is a smooth, fine-grained calfskin with a matte surface. Noir Swift produces a deep, saturated black. Palladium hardware. Kelly turn-lock closure on the front flap.
Collector's Insight:
The original Kelly Danse was produced during Jean Paul Gaultier's tenure as creative director and was discontinued before being reissued as the Kelly Danse II with updated proportions. Original-era Kelly Danse bags from the 2000s and early 2010s are sought after by collectors who prefer the first-generation silhouette. M Square places this at 2009, the middle of Gaultier's run at the house. Swift leather on the original Danse produces a softer drape than the Evercolor used on some later versions.
Resale Insight:
Original Kelly Danse bags trade at strong levels on the secondary market, driven by the multi-wear format and the Gaultier-era provenance. Noir with Palladium is the most versatile color and hardware combination for a bag designed to be worn four ways. Excellent condition on a 2009 production piece indicates careful ownership.
