Hermès Constance 24 On A Summer Day Nigel Peake Swift Palladium Hardware
For Spring Summer 2017 Hermès handed the Constance to Nigel Peake, the Irish artist and trained architect, and let him print an entire city onto Swift leather. Look closely and the abstract geometry resolves into high rises, rooftops, and trees rendered in soft pinks, warm yellows, orange, reds, blues, black, and white, a skyline on a summer day carried on the shoulder.
Swift is the right ground for it: a smooth, fine-grained calfskin that takes pigment with more saturation than any grained leather, which is why Hermès reserves it for printed and painted editions. The signature H clasp in Palladium anchors the composition without competing with it, and the strap doubles from crossbody to shoulder length in the classic Constance manner.
The Constance was drawn in 1959 by Catherine Chaillet and named for her daughter. Printed editions of this kind are produced for one season and never re-run, so the population is fixed at whatever left the atelier in 2017.

Collector's Insight: Artist collaboration Constances occupy a small and fiercely held niche. The Peake edition is among the most recognizable printed Constances the house has produced, and because a print run closes with its season, no future production can add to the surviving count. Swift also makes condition the governing variable, since a printed surface cannot be refinished the way a solid-color leather can be.
Resale Insight: Printed and artist-collaboration editions reach two buyer pools at once, the Constance collector and the buyer pursuing the print itself, which supports interest independent of the seasonal color cycles that move standard leather. Pristine examples are the narrow end of that supply, because the print records handling in a way solid leather does not.
