The story behind the Constance

In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.

This possibly unique Horseshoe stamped special order 24cm Constance is a truly incredible piece. The Rouge Vif ostrich exterior is like a giant strawberry with rare rose gold hardware. The smart, neutral interior is done in buttery soft Gris Agate Agneau Lambskin leather. Very few HSS Constances have come onto the market since they were first offered for special order, this is a rare opportunity to find such a special example in store-fresh condition.

The Constance features Hermès' signature H-clasp closure, one of the most recognizable hardware elements in the house's vocabulary. Interior is lined in matching leather with a center divider, front slip pocket, and rear slot pocket. The crossbody strap is adjustable.

Collector's Insight:
Horseshoe Stamp confirms this as a Special Order, made to client specification through Hermès' allocation program. HSS pieces are not available for general purchase and require an established purchase history. Ostrich production is constrained by raw material scarcity and limited annual output. Allocation within Hermès exotic bag production is among the most selective in the house.
