The story behind the Constance

In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.

Hermès dates the Constance to 1967, when Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. With its leather shoulder strap allowing the bag to hang freely, it soon became the favorite former First Lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy who popularized the Constance amongst Hollywood’s elite.

The Constance features Hermès' signature H-clasp closure, one of the most recognizable hardware elements in the house's vocabulary. Interior is lined in matching leather with a center divider, front slip pocket, and rear slot pocket. The crossbody strap is adjustable.

Collector's Insight:
The Constance is produced in significantly smaller quantities than the Birkin or Kelly, making it one of the more difficult Hermès bags to acquire at retail. The 18cm format is particularly scarce.

Resale Insight:
The Constance has emerged as one of the strongest performers in the Hermès resale market, with demand increasingly rivaling the Birkin and Kelly. The 18cm and 24cm sizes in classic colors maintain particularly strong positioning.
