SO BLACK is the all-black limited edition from Jean-Paul Gaultier's final period as Hermès Artistic Director, released around 2010 and ended with his departure. Box Calf was the edition's core leather, and the 35cm Birkin in Box with black PVD hardware is the configuration most associated with the collection: the smooth, semi-gloss Box surface carries the monochrome concept at its purest, with the blacked-out lock, turnkey, sangle plates, and feet dissolving into the leather rather than punctuating it.
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) bonds a matte black metallic coating to the hardware, an engineered finish rather than paint, durable in normal carry but unrepairable once worn through, which is why coating condition drives SO BLACK valuation. The JaneFinds Beaded Semi-Precious Stone Crossbody Chain is hand-knotted from up to 60 varieties of natural semi-precious stones strung between lobster-clasp hardware at each end. The clasp configuration attaches directly to the sangle hardware of Hermès bags and converts the bag to crossbody or shoulder wear. The chain also functions independently as a long necklace without a bag attached.
Documented stone varieties include amethyst, apatite, carnelian, citrine, emerald, labradorite, lemon quartz, peach moonstone, peridot, Peruvian opal, pink moonstone, prehnite, rose quartz, ruby, sunstone, and tourmaline. Each stone is individually hand-knotted between adjacent stones, securing the strand against bead loss in the event of any single break.
