The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsEach band is a separate panel joined at a clean horizontal seam.
Sellier construction, with exterior stitching and rigid edges, holds the four panels flat and keeps the color bands sharply defined, and Epsom's even embossed grain gives every color the same texture. Palladium hardware stays neutral against the palette.
Collector's Insight:
The Sunset differs from the earlier Rainbow Birkin, which used vertical color panels. Here the colors run horizontally, so the seams must align cleanly across the front, back and gussets.
Resale Insight:
On a multicolor Birkin, buyers check each seam for alignment and the lighter panels, Magnolia especially, for color transfer and marks, along with the usual corners and handles.
