The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe bag is crafted from Taurillon Novillo, a premium bull calfskin that serves as a sophisticated alternative to the ubiquitous Togo or Clémence. Novillo is distinguished by its ultra-fine natural grain and matte finish, but its true advantage lies in its physics: it is significantly lighter and more rigid than traditional leathers. This structural integrity allows the 35cm silhouette to maintain its architectural lines without the slouch often seen in softer skins.
Paired with cool Palladium hardware, the electric undertones of the Bleu Saphir are sharpened, creating a modern, high-contrast aesthetic. Produced in 2020 (Stamp Y), this pristine example offers the capacity of a travel bag with the refined polish of a rigid handbag. It represents the marriage of a heritage color with modern material innovation.
Collector's Insight:
Taurillon Novillo is widely considered a connoisseur's leather. It absorbs dye with exceptional saturation, making colors like Bleu Saphir appear richer and more vibrant than on Epsom. For the 35cm collector, the reduced weight of Novillo is a critical functional advantage, addressing the common complaint that large Birkins can become heavy. It offers the durability of bull leather with the structure of a Sellier piece.
Resale Insight:
Bleu Saphir is a foundational blue in the Hermès library, ranking alongside Blue Jean and Bleu Marine in historical significance. Finding a pristine 2020 example in Novillo, a leather produced in far smaller quantities than Togo, adds a distinct layer of scarcity to a highly usable configuration.
