The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsHere it covers the turn-lock plate and the strap plates in a small diamond texture, so the palladium catches light across its whole surface rather than along one polished edge.
Gris Perle is a pale pearl gray, and Box calf gives it the smooth, glazed ground that lets the engraving read. Box is the house's classic smooth calfskin: it holds a crisp line at every edge and takes on a patina with use.
The rest is the Birkin's own construction. The flap drops over two straps that close on the turn-lock, the padlock and two keys ride in a leather clochette, and two rolled handles stand over the 30 body. The padlock itself is smooth, which leaves the engraving to the plates.
Collector's Insight:
Guilloche is one of the rarer Hermès hardware finishes, and here it meets Box calf in a pale gray that shows the engraving at its clearest.
Resale Insight:
Box calf shows scratches readily, so buyers look closely at the flap and corners. With protective plastic still on the hardware, this example has not been carried.
