The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Togo's pebbled grain resists scratches and holds structure better than softer leathers such as Clémence, and palladium hardware cools the warm leather. At 30 cm the Birkin holds a day's essentials without the bulk of the 35.

Collector's Insight:
Gold Togo is the Birkin other configurations are measured against, and palladium hardware gives it a slightly cooler, more contemporary read than gold on gold.

Resale Insight:
Togo forgives light marks, so buyers check the corners, the white stitching for soiling and the handles, which darken with use.
