The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Discover Hermès Birkin Bags

Clemence leather is heavier-grained than Togo, with a softer drape that gives the bag a relaxed silhouette. It ages well and resists visible scratches.

The 30cm is the balanced silhouette valued for its capacity as a functional day bag. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and one open pocket. Signature turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the hardware configuration.

Collector's Insight:
The Birkin 30 represents the core of the Hermès handbag program. Production quantities are not disclosed by the house, and retail acquisition requires an established purchase history with a Hermès boutique.

Resale Insight:
The Birkin 30 is among the most consistently traded formats in the resale market. In a durable leather like Clemence, it is built to be carried regularly rather than saved for occasions.
