The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe smooth, polished Box carries broad reflections rather than the broken highlights of a pebbled leather, which gives the front and side panels their depth.
Sellier construction puts the seams on the outside. Stitching a shade lighter than the leather outlines the gussets, the flap and the straps, framing the compact silhouette in straight lines that the rolled handles soften. Gold fittings stand out against the dark leather, from the turn-lock and strap plates to the padlock hanging beside a clochette with its keys.
Box shows scratches readily, and this example has no visible marks. With use, its luster deepens over the years.
Collector's Insight:
The appeal of this version lies in the contrast between the familiar top-handle shape and its defined Sellier edges. Vert Foncé offers a dark green alternative to Noir without the brightness of a more saturated green.
Resale Insight:
When comparing Box Calf examples, the useful distinctions are surface marks, corner wear, handle shape and the completeness of the original accessories. The crisp edge construction is an important part of this particular bag's character.
