The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Mauve Pâle, new to the range in 2022, is a soft, powdery pink-lilac. Epsom's embossed grain holds both the color and the Sellier's crisp lines without softening. It is among the firmest of the house's calfskins, rigid enough to stand without support. Palladium hardware keeps the pastel cool.
The working parts match the Retourné Birkin's: a flap over two straps that close on the turn-lock, a padlock with a Mauve Pâle clochette, two rolled handles and four palladium feet on the base. The protective felt is still in place under the flap.
Collector's Insight:
The Sellier Birkin first appeared in 2014 as a limited 40 cm edition in Vache Hunter and later widened to the 25, 30 and 35. Epsom is the leather best suited to it, rigid enough to hold the outward-stitched edges.
Resale Insight:
Pale Epsom resists scratches but shows marks and color transfer at the corners and handles, which are the first places buyers look.
