The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe matte finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which gives the color a chalky depth that a shiny glaze would turn to glare, and the scales show across the whole face in large, flat tiles.
Palladium hardware is the cooler pairing and lets the color lead. At 25 cm the Birkin carries it in a compact frame suited to day or evening.
Collector's Insight:
Saturated colors on matte exotics are rarer than neutrals because the matte finish changes how pigment reads, and not every color works on it. Lime does, keeping its intensity under both daylight and artificial light.
Resale Insight:
Bright exotics show wear and color change more visibly than dark ones, so buyers check the corners, handles and flap edge for scuffs and fading first.
