The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe pebbled grain catches light and shadow unevenly across the color, which gives it a depth flatter leathers do not.
At 25 cm the Birkin carries this neutral in a compact frame. The padlock and its clochette hang from one of the two rolled handles, the straps meet over the flap at the turn-lock, and four feet stand under the base. Palladium keeps every fitting in the same quiet register as the gray.
Protective plastic still covers all of the hardware, padlock included, so the plating has been kept from wear. Togo grows more supple with use but keeps its shape.

Collector's Insight:
Étain sits with Noir and Étoupe among the Birkin colors that stay in demand across production cycles, whatever the seasonal palette.
Resale Insight:
Togo forgives light marks, so buyers look at the corners and base for wear through the grain and at the handles for darkening.
