Étain is the grey Hermès named for tin, and it behaves like the metal: a cool, even mid-grey with no brown in it and no blue, which is what separates it from Étoupe on one side and Gris Perle on the other. It is one of the house's most consistently requested neutrals because it reads as grey in every light rather than shifting warm or cool with the room.
On Togo the color sits matte across the pebbled grain and holds its depth, and gold hardware is the pairing that gives it warmth without changing what it is. The metal reads as an accent against the grey rather than blending into it, which is why Étain with gold tends to be requested by name where the palladium version is bought on availability.
This example is mint. The Togo is unmarked, the corners are sharp, and the hardware is clean. It carries an earlier stamp than current production and presents as though it has not been carried.
