Hermès worked elephant hide in limited runs decades ago and has not used it since, and the material behaves unlike anything in the present catalog: a deep, irregular fissured grain running across the panel like bark, formed by the animal rather than pressed into the leather. It is thick, dense and structurally stiff, which is why it holds an edge as well as it does.

Sellier construction suits that stiffness. The seams are stitched on the outside and the edges finished sharp, so a rigid hide reinforces the architecture instead of fighting it and the bag keeps its geometry decades on. The surface reads closer to charcoal than to a flat black, and the deep grain scatters light unevenly across the panel, which sets warm polished metal in harder relief than a smooth calf would.
