Jay Ahr Vintage 2013 Hermès Birkin 30 Orange Epsom Bandana Embroidery "Rio de Janeiro"

Jay Ahr’s passion for textiles continues with the intricately embroidered Bandana series. From the Sanskrit word for ‘a bond’, the bandana is inspired by the colourful Indian kerchiefs. However, the bandana stands as a symbol of multiculturalism, truly personal to each group it represents—whether gangs in LA, cowboys in the Midwest, or banditos in Mexico. It has been adopted and translated, imprinted with new meaning with the passing of time.

The Bandana series, inspired by the colorful Indian kerchiefs, explores both nuanced repetition as well as identity. Although the Bandana is found all over the world, it usually serves to identify a very specific tribe—be it gangs in LA, banditos in Mexico, or young students at Le Lycée.

Jay Ahr has worked with collectors, auction houses, and a global private network to curate and build the world’s largest collection of transformed Hermès bags. This independent and incredibly diverse collection combines beautifully crafted collector’s items with sustainable business practices to breathe new life into vintage pieces. Each piece, with its own original and completely unique story—literally woven into its surface—is no longer a bag, but a personal work of art. Although each piece is one of a kind, there are several distinct themes throughout the collection that explore and highlight a variety of subjects.

The Bandana collection is paired with Jay Ahr’s tongue-in-cheek twist on the Hermès Twilly, in a matching bandana pattern. Please note the Jay Ahr process entails the complete deconstruction of the bag and complete reassembly after the embroidery process is complete. This process is not in any way officially related to or sanctioned by Hermès and is done in complete independence. This bag is from a private collection.
