The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

Discover Hermès Kelly Bags

Collector's Insight:
Elephant leather is long discontinued at Hermès, which makes surviving examples exceptionally scarce. The classic gray with gold hardware and the Kelly 32 proportion deliver enduring refinement and top‑tier display value.

Resale Insight: Discontinued exotics with clean structure and neutral tones attract global demand. Expect sustained appreciation as availability remains limited and provenance becomes an ever larger driver of price.

Resale Insight:
The market demand for Kelly bags, particularly in the 32cm size, continues to outpace supply. This specific configuration is a staple for collectors seeking a balance of heritage and contemporary style.
