Hermès Kellywood 22 Bog Oak, Aluminum & Barenia Leather Palladium Hardware
Hermès Kellywood 22 Bog Oak, Aluminum & Barenia Leather Palladium Hardware
This is the original Kellywood: the 2020 edition that put the Kelly into solid wood for the first time and created both the 22 size and the technique the entire series is built on. The body is bog oak, timber that lay in peat for centuries while tannins and iron slowly blackened it through, a material that cannot be manufactured or replicated, with each section carrying grain no other example shares. Not since the Sterling Kelly had the house rendered its defining silhouette in a material this far from leather.
The construction debuted the Larmé inlay, a method drawn from fine furniture marquetry: solid sections rather than veneer, more than sixty hand-cut pieces fitted without visible joins, with aluminum chevrons hulled directly into the oak so metal and wood read as one surface. Fauve Barenia forms the handle, flap, and sangles with bone contrast stitching, the interior is lined in Gold Chèvre against the dark shell, and Palladium hardware holds the cool register of the aluminum. The Sellier lines the Kelly is known for are here cut rather than stitched into shape.

Collector's Insight:
Within the Kellywood series the Bog Oak original holds the position first editions always hold: it is the prototype of the language, the bag the later artistic editions elaborate on, and the version collectors mean when they trace where the wood program began. Production ran in vanishingly small numbers, and the piece carries a quiet material tension the series never repeated, pairing a leather that ages visibly with a wood that spent centuries becoming permanent. It asks to be kept the way art is kept, in stable conditions, and rewards it the same way.
Resale Insight:
Kellywood transactions occur privately far more often than publicly, with auction appearances rare enough that each becomes a reference point; Sotheby's counts the model among the rarest limited-edition Kellys in existence. The original edition benefits from the premium that accrues to a series' first expression, and secondary supply is structurally thin because the original buyers were allocated as collectors, not customers. An untouched example is the strongest form in which this piece reaches the market.
