Hermès Kelly 32 Retourné Multicolor Vibrato & Natural Leather Gold Hardware

Vibrato is a discontinued Hermès construction technique produced between 2000 and 2007. Thin strips of suede in varying colors are stacked horizontally and sliced through to expose the striped cross-section that defines the format, with each Vibrato panel structurally unique to its bag because the slice trajectory varies the visible strip widths and color distribution piece by piece. The technique requires substantially more material and atelier labor than standard panel construction, and Hermès has not reintroduced Vibrato in the nearly two decades since the program closed. The E □ (2001) stamp places this piece in the second year of Vibrato production, among the earliest documented Vibrato Kelly bags from the program.

This Kelly 32 Retourné is rendered in a vibrant saturated Vibrato palette — strips spanning orange, mustard yellow, dove grey, turquoise, white, magenta, green, and red across the front and back panels, gusset, and base — framed by smooth Natural leather at the top trim, sangles, handle, sides, base trim, and clochette. The vibrant multicolor palette represents the classic deployment of Vibrato where the technique was most often used to demonstrate Hermès' suede color-mixing capability across the spectrum, contrasting with rarer monochrome Vibrato executions. Retourné construction stitches panels inside-out then turns them to conceal seams, producing the softer rounded edges that pair naturally with the Natural leather's lighter cream-tan register and the burgundy contrast stitching that is signature to Natural leather production. Gold hardware completes the warm register aligned with the saturated palette. Interior lined in matching Chèvre with one zip pocket and two slip pockets.

Notes: Vibrato is discontinued construction (produced 2000–2007). Suede strips are sensitive to handling wear at slice edges. Natural leather develops patina with age and is more visible-wear-prone than treated leathers.

Collector's Insight:
Vibrato pieces are most commonly encountered in Birkin 30 and 35 sizes — Kelly 32 in Vibrato is a less common size and construction combination within documented Vibrato output. The E □ (2001) stamp places this piece in the second year of Vibrato production, with first-and-second-year output representing the earliest segment within the program's 2000–2007 production window. The multicolor vibrant palette is the more typical Vibrato deployment, demonstrating the technique's suede color-mixing across a saturated spectrum, and remains the most-recognized visual signature of the program. The Natural leather frame is a less commonly seen Vibrato pairing — Box Calf and other treated leathers appear more frequently as Vibrato frame material in the documented secondary market — adding a second restriction layer to the configuration.

Resale Insight:
Vibrato Kelly and Birkin pieces trade outside standard Kelly secondary-market dynamics, with valuation anchored to discontinued production status, the unrepeatable manual technique, and the structural uniqueness of each piece. Sotheby's, Christie's, and Bonhams have documented Vibrato Kelly and Birkin auction transactions across the past decade as comparables for the archival tier. The 2001 production year positions this piece in the early-second-year segment of Vibrato production, which auction provenance has historically treated as more desirable within the discontinued program. The multicolor vibrant palette commands stronger collector demand than monochrome or limited-palette Vibrato executions. Excellent condition with intact Vibrato strip integrity, no slice-edge fraying or lifting, intact Natural leather frame, and the documented square-era E stamp together establish position within Vibrato comparables.
