The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe all-black palette makes this a contrast of surfaces rather than colors: broad reflections across the leather and a softer sheen through the hair.
The Kelly's trapezoidal outline, single top handle and strap-and-turnlock closure keep the combination rooted in the model's classic form. The leather framing gives the hair-covered panels a defined outline without interrupting the black silhouette.
Collector's Insight:
Pony-skin Kellys are a rare departure from the more familiar smooth and grained leather versions. Paired with classic Box leather, this example brings an unusual material combination to an otherwise traditional black Kelly.
Resale Insight:
For this combination, buyers compare the hair panels and their edges, the surface of the Box leather and the hardware. This example is offered in Very Good condition with its accessories, but without a box.
