Alligator and crocodile are routinely conflated, and scale shape does not separate them: both yield square belly tiles and rounder flank scales depending on the cut. The reliable tell is the sensory pore. Each crocodile scale carries a tiny opening left behind by a sensory hair the animal used to read pressure in the water; alligator body scales have none, so the surface reads smoother and quieter. The belly also carries no bony deposits, which is why alligator sits softer in the hand than a comparable crocodile hide.

At 20 centimetres that quietness is the point. There is no panel large enough for a scale run to become a pattern, so the skin registers as texture rather than as ornament, and in black it registers as almost nothing at all until the light moves. Matte compounds it: the finish is buffed rather than polished, so it absorbs light where a Lisse surface would throw it back. The result is an exotic that reads as restraint, which is not what most exotics are bought to do.

Sellier construction is what holds the format together at this scale. External saddle stitching and rigid panels keep the edges sharp where a Retourne build would round them, and on a bag this small a rounded edge reads as slack. Warm metal is the traditional counterweight to black.

Collector's Insight: The Kelly 20 is the least-produced size in the line and the one where an exotic commission is hardest to justify commercially, since the skin required per bag is small but the atelier hours are not. Matte narrows it again: a buffed finish conceals nothing, so hides that would pass for Lisse are regularly turned down for matte. Black removes the last variable, which leaves the evenness of the scale run as the only thing to judge.

Resale Insight: Black exotics reach the widest audience inside the exotic buyer group, because they carry no styling commitment beyond the skin itself, and the 20 is the size that group concentrates in. Comparables in this exact configuration appear infrequently enough that condition at the corners and handle, where a small bag shows wear first, tends to decide placement more than colour or hardware would.
