The story behind the HAC

Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.

Discover Hermès Birkin HAC Bags

Initially conceived as a carrier for a horse's saddle, these bags have since evolved into cherished possessions, treasured for their generous interiors and sturdy handles, thus making them an ideal travel partner. This particular specimen, fashioned from Black Togo leather, serves as an exemplary travel companion.

Émile-Maurice Hermès, the creative mind behind the HAC, first crafted it around 1900, according to Hermès' own chronology. In the ensuing years, a myriad of other iconic designs, such as the Kelly in 1956 and the Birkin in 1984, emerged, with the HAC serving as their foundational influence.

Collector's Insight:
The Birkin 40 in Black Togo represents the core of the Hermès handbag program. Production quantities are not disclosed by the house, and retail acquisition requires an established purchase history with a Hermès boutique.

Resale Insight:
The Birkin 40 is among the most consistently traded formats in the resale market. In a durable leather like Togo, it is built to be carried regularly rather than saved for occasions.
