Haut à Courroies means high straps, and the name is literal: the sangles run the full height of a bag designed in the 1890s to carry saddles and riding boots. That job set the proportions, taller than wide over a deep base, and they were never revised. When the Birkin arrived in 1984 it took the same architecture and compressed it horizontally, which is the whole difference between the two silhouettes.

Togo's pebbled grain gives a bag this size the structure to stand on its own without the rigidity of a stiffer calfskin, and it absorbs contact rather than displaying it.
