The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsGrizzly is Hermès's nubuck-finish doe suede, introduced in the mid-2010s and produced in deliberately limited runs across Birkin, Kelly, and Ghillies formats. The leather has a soft brushed nap that catches light differently than smooth grains, producing a velvet-like surface that responds to direction and pressure with visible variation. Standard Grizzly Birkin construction pairs the suede body with Swift leather trim and handles. Swift's structural integrity is required to hold rigid handle anchoring that suede alone cannot support. Gold is the warm cognac-tan Hermès has produced since the 1960s, reading particularly rich on the textured Grizzly nap where the brushed fibers catch and amplify the warm pigment. Gold hardware completes the tonally unified configuration, pairing warm leather with matching warm metallics.
Collector's Insight:
Grizzly Birkin production has been intermittent rather than continuous, with allocation concentrated in 2017-2020 and infrequent surfacing since. The suede surface is more handling-sensitive than grained leathers, which makes pristine examples meaningfully scarcer than the production numbers alone suggest.
Resale Insight:
Grizzly Birkins occupy a specific collector tier: buyers seeking textural alternatives to standard grained leathers, with secondary supply consistently below interest. Pristine condition is the highest-value configuration for the leather, since suede shows wear more readily than Togo or Epsom and most secondary examples carry visible handling.
